It is a high mountain overlooking the Dead Sea, the Jordan River Valley, Jericho and the remote hills of Jerusalem, a site where Moses saw the holy lands of Canaan, which he never entered. He died and was buried in Moab, as stated in the Bible: "He was buried in an atmosphere in a desperate land, opposite a home that was blown away" (Deuteronomy 34:6).
Mount Nebo became a pilgrimage destination for early Christians from Jerusalem, and a chapel there was built in the 4th century AD to commemorate Moses' life. Some stones from that church remain in their original place in the wall surrounding the church's pit. The church was expanded in the fifth and sixth centuries and became the great church we know today. The church has spectacular collections of Byzantine mosaic paintings.
The brass life erected outside the church campus symbolizes the brass beard raised by Moses in the desert and the cross on which Jesus was crucified.
