The Biosphere Positive Reserve is the lowest nature reserve in the world, located in the deep Mujib Valley, not far from the eastern Dead Sea, and 410 m below sea level.
The Reserve extends its exquisite landscape to the Karak Mountains and Madaba north and south, reaching 900 m above sea level in some places.
The Mujib Valley has a spectacular biodiversity that is still being explored and documented to this day, as a result of its 1,300-metre altitude difference and year-round water flow in the valley from seven tributaries. More than 300 generations of plants, 10 generations of meat, and many species of migratory and non-migratory birds have been documented.
The reserve - specifically in some remote and inaccessible areas of mountains and canyons - is a haven for rare species of snakes, goats, and mountain animals. The sand rock slopes of the Mujib Valley are an ideal habitat for one of the world's most important mountain goat species: the Nubian ibex.
